Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex disease with several modifiable lifestyle factors, and diet compliance is an essential part of the treatment and control of diabetes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of nutrition education programs on knowledge and practice of diet therapy to control diabetes and prevent its complications. 35 subjects were selected among type 2 diabetic patients enrolled in biochemistry laboratories. The knowledge, practice, and perception of the diet therapy were offered through information on a website with the help of videos, animations, and pictures for 3 months. Results were analyzed by questionnaires before and after 3 months of education. The main outcome measures were fasting blood sugar (FBS), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C), body mass index (BMI) and lipid profile. The results were as follows: the educated group comprised 54% femal and 46% males. The results showed that levels of FBG, HbA1C, BMI, and lipid profile levels had statistically significant reductions after applying the nutrition education program. Therefore, nutrition education program seem to be very important and effective in improving knowledge and practice among T2DM patients for better control and preventing complications of the disease.
